We are busy with many projects here at the Biochar Project. If you want to find out more about any of them, if you’d like to join in, or have something you’d like to offer, contact us! biochar 2012

Hill Of Abundance
The cornerstone of what we’re doing. The Hill of Abundance flowers into the Hill of Perennial Food, the Meadow of Medicinals, the Forest of Lumber Abundance. It’s the ashram of our community, where you can come for a short term stay and be within a stone’s throw of all the action.
The Hill of Abundance is also the place where we apply sustainable, permaculture, biological and organic principles to encourage biodiversity and move towards becoming self sufficient as a community. It is the first part of our project and it’s heart.

Carbon In Weeds Out
In 2011 we received a grant to conduct scientific trials into the effects of using biological methods for weed control. The grant runs from 2012 to 2013. We are demonstrating to farmers and foresters that there is a way to remove weeds using organic technologies.
For Weeds Out, we have set up four plots – biological controls, mechanical controls, biodynamic controls and a control plot where we do nothing.
For Carbon In, we are adding biochar and measuring the difference in growth rates between that plot and the control plot. Although the grant finishes at the end of 2013, we are planning to keep going with the trial for 20 years, so that we can create hard data over the long term.
Biochar The Movie
We’re creating Biochar the Movie to document the Weeds Out Carbon In trials. In the movie we take something that could be boring and scientific and make it accessible and interesting.

Hi! Cool to see all this work being done, kudos! I am currently researching and about to fabricate two TLUDs for a project in downtown Phoenix, Arizona, USA., where a community has been planting open lots with sunflowers, which when harvested will be used to create both biochar with the stalks and oil with the seeds (and a local high school will make that into biodiesel). I’m really excited to learn about biochar, especially after contributing towards a biodiesel project down in Peru. Also eager to keep traveling and keep experiencing sustainable living, so if there’s anything I can do to help, let me know!
