Benguet Corp optimistic govt will lift of suspension

THE country’s oldest mining firm Benguet Corp. said on Thursday it remains optimistic that mining regulators will reverse the suspension order slapped on its nickel operations in the province of Zambales.

In a statement, Benguet Corp. said that the audit findings of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) will validate that deforestation was the main culprit for the siltation in major waterways in the province and not its mining operation in the town of Sta. Cruz.

“Benguet Corp remains optimistic that the audit findings on its nickel operations in Sta. Cruz, Zambales will validate that it has been operating as a responsible mining company in the province,” the company said.

“We are confident that the achievements of its nickel operations in the pursuit of responsible mining over the years as evidenced by its compliance to international standards, regulatory mandate, and community development programs, will result in the favorable outcome of the recently conducted audit by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR),” it added.

Benguet’s wholly owned subsidiary Benguetcorp Nickel Mines Inc. (BNMI), along with two other nickel operators in the province, was suspended due to complaints of environmental degradation as a result of its nickel ore extraction.

Former MGB Director Leo Jasareno had clarified that the preventive suspension against BNMI was in view of the Writ of Kalikasan issued by the Supreme Court and a newly signed Executive Order by the local government unit of Zambales suspending all mining operations in the province.

Geologist Dr. Carlo Arcilla, citing a scientific study conducted by the University of the Philippines-National Institute of Geological Sciences (UP-NIGS), identified deforestation as the main culprit for the siltation in Zambales and decried the closure of mines based on unfounded accusations.

“I challenge anybody to come up with a deterministic, more accurate study than what we have done for more than a year,” Arcilla said.

“This should be the basis [for deciding]whether you close mines or not—science—not feelings,” the geologist added, in an apparent swipe at the DENR.

The study showed that much of the siltation during the rainy season is caused by the natural erosion characteristic of the land formations in the province, particularly highly erodible banks, run-off from agricultural areas, and reworking of existing deposited sediments, mostly downstream, and that mining activities contribute a negligible 6 to 9 percent siltation in the river systems.

Mining ‘not necessarily’ harmful
“Many times mining has been the whipping boy of many things. Mining is an ugly business but it is not necessarily a harmful business,” Arcilla said at the Mining Philippines 2016 International Conference and Exhibition held last August 23-25 at the Marriott Hotel in Manila.

Meanwhile, Benguet Corp. stressed that BNMI has conducted dredging activities even outside its MPSA (Mineral Production Sharing Agreement) to help in preventing sediment movement further downstream.

It said an assessment conducted by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 3 in October 2015 revealed water parameters remain within safe optimum levels to allow fish and other aquatic resources to thrive in the area.

The assessment also revealed a slight increase in silt depth, possibly contributed by domestic activities, river run-off and natural calamities.

“Acting on BFAR’s recommendations, BMNI continues to implement precautionary measures to minimize silt accumulation, including regular mangrove planting and coastal clean-ups,” Benguet Corp. said.
BNMI received its ISO 14001: Environmental Management System certification on March 17, 2016.

TÜVRheinland, an independent body headquartered in Cologne, Germany, and a leader in evaluating management systems and international certification in the Philippines, granted the EMS certification to BNMI.
Despite the suspended operations, Benguet said that BNMI continues to engage its communities in social development programs. It has recently partnered with the Philippine Biochar Association (PBiA) in a project to produce activated biochar as possible sustainable livelihood.

Biochar is charcoal produced from plant matter and stored in the soil as a means of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Benguet Corp., which has been in the mining industry for a century, was cited by new MGB Director Mario Luis Jacinto as one of the good examples of responsible miners in the country.

Make agric attractive to graduates, experts tell FG

A professor of agronomy at the University of Ibadan, Gideon Adeoye, has urged the Federal Government to encourage graduates to embrace farming after the mandatory national youth service by giving them land and loans.
The agronomist said doing this would boost food production and prevent the nation from wasting huge funds on food importation, especially with the economy in limbo.
Adeoye said this on Thursday at the Bowen University, Iwo during the second annual conference of Biochar Initiative of Nigeria under the theme, ‘Biochar Technology: Potential for sustainable food security and cleaner environment.’
He said, “The Federal Government should give some portions of land and revolving funds to graduates in order to allow them to practise agriculture after the National Youth Service Corps. This will lure many youths into agriculture and it will boost food production locally.”
He also urged the government to revive the farm settlement policy of the Late Chief Obafemi Awolowo which he said ensured food was produced abundantly then.
He said, “We don’t have a standing policy on agriculture that can get this country out of this mess. Climate change is posing a lot of danger and the government of the day has not come up with anything.
“Large areas in Erimo, Oyo State, where rice was grown in bounty quantities during the days of Awolowo have since been nullified. Farm settlement policy of Awolowo first suffered a blow when government started taking over farmlands to construct houses. Except the government goes back to what have been nullified, I don’t see anything coming from agriculture in this country.”
Adeoye also said activities of some herdsmen which had led to the destruction of farms were enough to scare away interested persons from investing in agriculture.
He also said the Nigerian government was not  doing enough to upscale the standards of agriculture.
The President  of Biochar Initiative of Nigeria, Dr. John Fagbenro, stated that  biochar was a material that could  be found anywhere, stressing  that biochar, unlike the inorganic fertilizers, renewed itself  when applied to the soil from time to time.
But he said the technology used in the application of the carbon-rich charcoal-like powder was new in this part of the world, saying the BIN committee was working towards familiarising people in the locality with it.
The Vice Chancellor of Bowen University, Prof. Matthews Ojo, advised farmers in Iwo to embrace the biochar initiative, which he said could  help in boosting  food production in the town.
He said the soil in Iwo was sandy and rocky, saying a chunk of the Iwo people tilled the overused land, which could hardly produce good yields but he said their produce would increase drastically with the application of  biochar

I would have liked to see the thing in operation. It is REALLY important that the gasses he spoke about are BURNED, not just offgassed, or else he is releasing toxic gasses such as methane into the air, and that’s the sort of thing that leads to laws banning anything that burns wood.

Burning plastic is also highly polluting, so was astonished that he recommended that to start the fire.

Fighting Poverty and Global Warming

The first months I spend time to study topics about rebuilding soils. True this process of learning I became very passionate about this topic so I decided that I really wanted to work around this topic as my Richmond Vale climate compliance action.

I notice that they already trie 2 times to make a bio-char produce, the second version was running but it had some miss functions. So I decided to improve this design. After my decision I dogged deeper in the topic of bio-char. What I found was amazing, I was really stunt by the benefits of it. I knew that I didn’t invent the wheel but still I had the feeling I found something precious. First of all bio-char is a term for charcoal that is used for agriculture purposes.

This means that we take the charcoal and put it in the soil. The main benefits going from soils improvements, drought resistance, waste management and storing carbon dioxide back in the ground. Like I said before It is not something new, this technique of improving the soil existed some 2000 years ago in the amazon.

What is fascinating about this is you can still find existing places where you can see that the first ground layer is fully covered with bio-char. Scientists discovered that 10 %  of the amazon is covered with this. Bio-char is also known in those regions as Terra Preta what fertile black soil means.

the search to improve the design. I was not an easy task. Should I go for a design that is easy in use and easy to make also thinking about the costs. Because a secondary goal is also to spread the meaning of bio-char. I decided to make a kiln like the previous one but make it with thicker metal. So it last longer. So at a point I was complete ready with the design on paper. I thought I was already behind the half of the project but that wasn’t the case.

I start to make a accounting for the materials and I notice that this I going to be expansive. First I applied for a donation of the metal because this was the major cost. This was the annoying part, I was trapped in a circle of waiting, calling, mailing, waiting, calling, mailing… the project didn’t had a progress at that time. After 3 weeks I needed to make a decision, the metal was really expansive and we didn’t had the money in our team budget for this. The school noticed this and we started to find a way how we could buy the metal.

so finally the moment was there when I could buy the metal. totally excitement! But as you can imagine, the cost of the metal was the biggest but not the only cost so it took me a lot of arranging and budget management to stand where I stand now.

To be honest is wasn’t easy all the time (not that I expected that it would be easy), sometimes it was going one step forward and two steps back. But that is why it was such a nice learning process. This was a project that I definitely take home with me to Belgium.

California currently faces unprecedented environmental challenges. Due to the drought of the past several years and the accompanying beetle infestation, the State is experiencing out-of-control tree mortality on a vast scale, with upwards of 65 million dead or dying trees to date and no end in sight; sharply increasing danger from seasonal wildfires; and a lot more pressure on critical resources, with water heading the list. Along with the devastation of our forests comes increased strain on our agricultural resources, as the drought makes less water available for growing and soil quality declines. In fact, the State’s environmental situation due to drought amounts to an emergency, one that needs to be addressed as quickly, efficiently, and safely as possible.

As the first step in this process, California Biochar Technologies, a California Biochar development company, can help to mitigate the environmental disaster in our forests. While dead trees continue to collect on log decks

throughout the State, California’s counties and municipalities can use our locally deployable, nonpolluting, thermo-conversion systems to transform this wood into usable heat and electricity for local needs, and also into Biochar.

A by-product of the thermo-conversion of organic waste, Biochar is a highly useful form of carbon that can help to restore soil quality in damaged forests and farmlands alike, while also helping to reduce demands for water, by helping the ground to retain more of it. A valuable resource for environmental filtration, cleaning, and restoration, Biochar has myriad other beneficial uses in a variety of industries. It can be sold to a wide variety of markets and to obtain carbon credits. By using California Biochar Technologies’s systems, our counties and municipalities can thus help to restore California’s environment, including through carbon sequestration, generate clean energy, and support local, sustainable economies throughout the State.
