Where There Is (No) Smoke, There Is Fire

2 May, 2016

world biochar headlines 05 2016Called the Wild, these biomass-burning camp stoves are manufactured in Italy by Enki Stove, an upstart that touts ease of use, environmental friendliness, and efficiency with its fan-powered towers.

The stoves burn any dry organic material like pine needles, twigs, paper, or even potato chips. All you need is a match; light the fuel and the flames burgeon inside the cylinder, stoked with a battery-operated fan that builds the fire to a roaring blaze.

The Wild functions like other rocket and fan-powered stoves – insert fuel, light, and cook. What sets it apart, according to the company, is its heat efficiency and flame control.

Propane and gas stoves are the typical go-to for flame control when camping, but they require purchasing or refilling new cans of fuel. The fuel for rocket stoves is free for basic cooking in rugged conditions, but less ideal for cooking bigger meals.

world biochar headlines 05 2016Enter the Enki Stove – ideal for bigger and fancier meals – think “glamping,” not camping. The company claims the stove’s fan, which draws all gas emissions back into the flame cylinder and a “special geometric shape” result in 98 percent combustion efficiency – i.e., less energy lost as smoke – and temperatures that reach up to 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit.

world biochar headlines 05 2016We got a scoop on this prototype wood-fire backpacking stove, which offers a neat all-in-one design. Read more…

This also results in the breakdown of burned biomass into biochar, rather than ash. Biochar fixes carbon into the solid byproducts of pyrolysis – fire – preventing the release of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide) into the atmosphere, great if you want to create high quality compost or just save the Earth every time you make dinner.

The Wild has two main drawbacks: weight and price. Available in two models, 8- and 14-inch-tall (the smaller version is suitable for up to four people), these stainless steel and aluminum stoves tip the scales at three to six pounds – fine for car camping, but a significant burden for backpacking use.

world biochar headlines 05 2016Even more impressive is the burden on your pocket – the Wild begins at about $250 for the small stove and north of $300 for the larger option.

We like rocket stove concepts for camping – they’re simple, effective, and typically cleaner than a campfire alone, but do require dry material to burn and aren’t universally useable. For those willing to forage for fuel, this is an interesting but pricy option.

We haven’t tested this one, but it has a cool form and may be worth investigating for those in the market.

All Enki stoves come with a rechargeable battery that will power the fan for up to 50 hours, the brand cites. Enki Stove also offers solar chargers as an add-on to recharge in the wilds.

New book on biochar published

6 May, 2016

May 6, 2016 – The Soil Science Society of America has published “Agricultural and Environmental Applications of Biochar: Advances and Barriers.” According to the editors, Mingxin Guo, Zhongqi He, and Sophie Minori Uchimiya, “this book aims to push forward the practical use of biochar by recognizing the gap between biochar research and application and pinpointing the barriers to field uses of biochar. Fifty-seven international scientists and professionals active in biochar research and application were invited to contribute.”

Discover the mechanisms and processes of biochar amendment for achieving stunning agricultural and environmental benefits. Agricultural and environmental communities are looking to biochar for enhancing soil carbon sequestration and crop productivity, but practical applications are elusive. Accomplished international researchers present a whole picture of biochar in improving soil quality, reducing soil greenhouse gas emissions, and decontaminating stormwater and mine sites. Composition and characteristics of biochar, its interactions with contaminants and soil constituents, and its transformation in the environment are addressed. Readers will appreciate the comprehensive review of the latest biochar research and applications and gain critical guidance in best biochar generation and use.

“The Soil Science Society of America promotes good science and practice related to soils and believes that the application of biochar materials offers promising solutions to agricultural and environmental concerns like climate change, soil health, and water contamination,” says Harold Van Es, president of the Soil Science Society of America.

The book retails for $160, and can be purchased http://www.societystore.org or by calling 608-268-4960.

Biochar added to a red oxisol benefits the sugar beet seedlings development?

11 May, 2016

The objective of this study was to verify the effect of biochar (granulated charcoal) added to an oxisol on the sugar beet seedlings production. The experiment was conducted in the seedlings nursery at the Mato Grosso State University, located at Nova Xavantina municipality, MT, Brazil, during the 2011 crop year. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design with five treatments and four repetitions. Different doses of biochar were applied to an oxisol in order to evaluate the seedlings growth and quality, studing the differences between doses of biochar through linear regression. The biochar addition to the oxisol did not promoted growth or quality increase on sugar beet seedlings. All the evaluated treatments presented poor seedlings development and quality, below the optimal level. The addition of low-chemical quality biochar in low fertility soils and with no fertilization is not recommended for sugar beet production during the short seedling production cycle.

The Promise of Bio Char

13 May, 2016

Via Next World TV

Introducing Bio Char! Little briquettes of charcoal that may come to the planet’s rescue in the nick of time!

Bio-char is one of the most exciting developments in science today. It is an ancient method of enhancing soil fertility and carbon sequestration. It helps the soil retain water and increase crop yields. It enhances microbiological activity. It retains nutrients for plants that would otherwise be lost to the atmosphere, or washed away by rains.

This could represent a key strategy in breaking the cycle of slash and burn farming, and restore our soil.

The most striking visual evidence in this video comes at around 3:55. See for yourself the 880% increase in crop yields where bio char was used in combination with fertilizer!

Unlike other organic material that can be added to the soil, bio char remains for long periods, offering the opportunity to sequester the carbon.

In this way it is actually carbon – negative. Bio-char REMOVES carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Learn about this miracle coal, which can be produced on a small scale as well. Very exciting!

I never knew a picture could do so much for a plant!

Do I just print out and stick it in the dirt or what?

just the picture, how, can I print it out and tear it up then add to the soil. if I printed it out on poster paper, would it triple yields. /s

Hmm. Learnt something new.

No, you guys, you just burn it.

What? Why would adding charcoal affect yields?

It has the appearance of charcoal, but it is actually the result of super heating wood (pine or oak for example) to the point that the only remaining matter is closer to pure carbon. It is very porous which enables more water retention and amplifies the density of microbes which are a key part in plant growth.

It’s special charcoal. And plenty of people use porous substrate, this isn’t anything magical

Alright. Try Miracle grow instead

I don’t really get what joke you’re trying to make, but thanks for downvoting me! You sure did win the argument now

Julie Weisenhorn
Extension Educator, Horticulture
University of Minnesota Extension

The purpose of this study (2012-2015) was to answer the question “Is biochar a good soil amendment for home landscapes?” Biochar is a carbon-rich solid byproduct of pyrolysis, the process of converting biomass into biofuel.  Fifty Extension Master Gardeners in Minnesota and 25 in Iowa observed and recorded the performance of 15 commonly grown vegetable and flower crops in seven demonstration gardens amended with hardwood biochar. Soil types ranged from sandy to silt loam to clay and provided the opportunity to observe whether biochar had an effect on crop performance, specifically plant growth and in some cases yield.  Preliminary results show biochar had some beneficial effect on certain crop performance in poor (low nutrient) soils, and informally, volunteers observed biochar-amended soils were less compacted. Extension outreach was an important component of this project.  This project is part of CenUSA Bioenergy Objective 9: Extension and Outreach (https://www.cenusa.iastate.edu/). CenUSA Bioenergy is supported by AFRI Competitive Grant No. 2011-68005-30411 from the USDA NIFA.

The CharCone: a great little kiln that will cook your food and help uncook the planet!

28 May, 2016

I am always flattered and excited when asked to do product reviews related to biochar.  Recently Bruce F. designed the CharCone, a mini Kon-Tiki geared towards the cooking crowd and asked if I’d be interested in taking it out for a test drive.

Bruce comes to the biochar world from a unique perspective.  A former chef and now a small business owner of SpitJack, he definitely knows his way around fire.  He also managed the sumptuous banquet at the US Biochar conference in Amherst which included some very unique biochar elements.  Bruce is very collaborative which isn’t overly common in the commercial world of biochar, so of course I agreed to test his kiln!

world biochar headlines 05 2016

The first burn I did was on a day which was too windy so I aborted before getting too close to the edge of the kiln.  Even so, about 5 gallons of char came out very nicely with only a few larger pieces that didn’t char through thoroughly (those just go in the next burn).  One trick with a small kiln is using easily bendable feedstock (e.g. dried reeds) to get a bed of coals going. This kind of fast burning feedstock is also good to use for the last 10 minutes or so of a burn as it keeps the fire going but doesn’t need a lot of time to fully char.

The second burn was on a perfect day wind-wise but a bit on the hot side!  Here are a few thoughts on using different feedstocks with the CharCone:

world biochar headlines 05 2016

A full burn took 1:45 and generates more than 10 gallons of what looks to be very good biochar.  Quenching the burn takes less than 5 gallons of water which is very handy.  The timing of feeding the fire is entirely dependent on what feedstock you are using.  If you are planning to cook, it would be better to use larger sticks so you don’t need to feed the fire so often.

What I really like about this kiln is its transportability.  With a few tools the legs can easily be taken off at which point the kiln fits nicely into the back of a car.  This makes it ideal for taking the CharCone to educational events or over to a friend’s house to help them char through yard debris while cooking a few hot dogs. With this kind of kiln you could also create a local Uber or CharB&Q for Kilns, which I believe Bruce has set up in Easthampton, MA. For more information on purchasing or renting kilns, check out the CharCone website.

Overall I highly recommend the CharCone!
