Biochar application to cropland has been recommended as a strategy to reduce increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations and mitigate climate change. However, the direction and magnitude of responses of greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes to biochar application to cropland remain unclear. Our meta‐analysis of 296 observations across 61 studies for the first time quantitatively estimated the effects of biochar amendment on fluxes of three GHGsCO2, N2O, and CH4. The results showed that biochar application led to a significant change in soil GHGs emissions: in general, 19% for CO2, −16% for N2O (P < 0.05), but no pronounced change in CH4 emissions; in paddy, −5% for CO2, −20% for N2O, but +19% for CH4 (P < 0.05); in upland, −18% for N2O, +12% for CO2, and high uncertainty for CH4. The responses of soil GHG fluxes to biochar application were regulated mainly by experiment length, biochar application rate, biochar properties, providing a new perspective for more comprehensive understanding on biochar. The biochar derived from husk was recommended to apply to cropland with an application rate of 20–30 t·ha−1.

Problems by measuring the nitrate content in biochar samples, what could be the problem?

Does anyone have problems with measuring nitrate in soil / biochar samples or soil samples mixed with biochar by using Flow injection analysis?

The instrument is distureb by measuring the samples. At first I thought It could be a problem by iron, which was ammended to the biochar, but by using a different biochar the problems are still the same. The samples where extracted with 2 M KCl and after it filtered.

Question is not clear. What kind of problem u r getting? Please elaborate it.

Biochar: Chiang Mai’s Burning Cure?

biochar headlines 03 2016Thirty percent of people in the North of Thailand live off less than one dollar a day. Most of these are farmers. Farmers with no formal education. Farmers who have followed farming traditions passed down by the generations, with any new information most often provided via sales pitches by people peddling fertilisers and seeds, with their own very biased agendas.Change is not something that is easily embraced,especially amongst farmers scattered across some very remote terrain. As the burning season begins in earnest, farmers ready their fields and the residents in Chiang Mai close their windows, adorn their masks and get down to another year of anti-smoke campaigns.

Michael Shafer explaining how it all works.

“We can’t tell the farmers to stop burning when they have no other options,” said Michael Shafer, Director of Warm Heart Foundation (warmheartworldwide.org), a grassroots community development organisation servicing the rural poor of Northern Thailand based in Phrao District, in response to the government’s hardline approach on burning. He explains that blanket bans just don’t work.

The Problem

If we ignore all the other crops, Chiang Mai province devotes 630,000 rai of land to rice production alone. When all the rice is harvested, farmers are left with almost 200,000 tons of rice straw, and 80,000 tons ofrice stubble. Rice stubble is the lower stems of the rice plant, often left in the ground and then burnt before the next grow season begins. Ifwe assume that halfofthe rice straw is used as feed and organic mulch fertiliser for crops such as mushrooms and onions, that will still leave around 100,000 tons ofrice straw and 80,000 tons ofstubble to be burnt each year. According to Warm Heart’s research, this will generate over one million kilograms of smoke. That’s almost 77 billion cigarettes worth of smoke – around 45,000 cigarettes per person for the entire population of Chiang Mai annually.

And this is just the rice.

“Smoke is a real public health issue,” said Shafer after explaining the numbers. “When farmers burn, they do what is called a field burn, which burns at very low temperatures over the entire field, resulting in the release of many toxic greenhouse gasses that create the smog.” This smoke that is released in the form of many gasses and particles is described by the scientific community as black carbon. In fact, black carbon is a relatively new term and allegedly accounts for almost half of the cause of the world’s global warming.

The World Health Organisation reports that there is no ‘safe level of exposure’ to both PM10 particles and PM2.5 particles. PM10 particles are the ones that get stuck in your lungs and make it harder to breathe, whereas PM2.5 particles can get into your blood stream and do serious damage. In fact, Chiang Mai has a much higher rate oflung cancer compared to the rest ofthe country – a direct correlation to the smoke that plagues us every day.

Yet even after all this information, farmers continue to burn. According to Shafer, this is not because they don’t care about the smoke or worry about their health, but because there is really no other option. They suffer just like the rest of us, with the added pressure of pointing fingers from the cities.

“What the people in the city forget is that the farmers up the mountains have it so much worse,” Shafer says. “Their homes don’t have air conditioning or even windows to keep out the smoke. They have to work outside around the smoke every day, and they are exposed to much more than people in the city are.” He jokes that city people are far too precious, and that in reality, ifthe smoke didn’t make it down to the city (which most of it doesn’t already), nobody would care.

It’s a strong point.

A Possible Solution?

“I had to come up with awayto reduce the smoke, but in a way that farmers and governments would support and promote,” said Shafer.

In 2013 he first learnt about biocharat conference hosted in Chiang Mai byECHO Asia, a foundation that gathers solutions that promote sustainable farming techniques and methods of solving hunger problems.

“Biochar is basically carbon,” he explained. “It’s the second best thing to Activated Carbon which is usually a substance reserved for big companies who can afford the expensive manufacturing costs.”

Not long after the conference, Shafer was invited to Pun-Pun, a well-known NGO not far from Chiang Mai, for a demonstration on biochar making. Unfortunately he was left feeling unimpressed. “The demonstrated technology struck both me as unsafe, inefficient, labour-intensive and way too small to be useful in a real world setting.” Seeing the potential, Warm Heart Foundation set to work designing a biochar oven that was both affordable and easy to use. By early 2014, they had their first set of prototypes. One of their larger systems permits a single, elderly individual to fill, burn, and quench six barrels ofcorn cobs in less than two hours, producing 180kg of biochar each day, or one tonne per week.

biochar headlines 03 2016Soon Shafer was approached by the US Consulate of Chiang Mai who offered to help acquire a grant to fund Warm Heart’s work and with that money, they expanded, collated data and finally began to extend their research towards a hook that they could use to convert the local farmers to biochar.

Farmers Unconvinced

For the rest of 2015, Warm Heart turned their focus towards how to utilise the biochar as a sustainable product that could have the potential to be bought, sold and traded. “Biochar alone is not great for farmers,” Shafer explained. “If you just put it in your soil, it will absorb all the water and minerals and starve crops. It needs to be fertilised first – but when it is, it is incredible.”

“To fertilise biochar, all you need to do is soak it in pig’s piss,” Shafer said matter-offactly. “One corncob turned into biochar has the surface area of roughly one hectare, so it is a great absorbent.” In fact, farmers can fertilise with whatever comes to hand; manure, urine, compost etc. Yet it doesn’t stop there. Biochar also adsorbs minerals and chemicals that “makes each biochar lump a ball of powerful fertiliser that boosts the growth of microbe soil communities which can last forever, unlike conventional synthetic fertilisers that are quickly washed away.”

In addition to being great for the soil, fertilised biochar sits at a slightly alkaline pH of 8. “This is ideal for the clay soils of Thailand which are quite acidic. It brings their pH up from around 4.5pH to a neutral pH of 7, increasing plant growth and the variety of crops.” As it is so absorbent, once incorporated into soil it can hold water for up to three days longer than regular soil, reducing the labour it takes to water crops.

In just a few years, farmers who switch to biochar fertiliser will find that their soils are pretty much always fertile and they can become totally self-sufficient.

Yet despite being a great fertiliser, the local farming communities still didn’t see the benefits. “Many farmers don’t really understand net profit,” Shafer said. “They understand profit to be the money they make after selling their crop at a market. They don’t take into account the cost offertiliser, labour or water. This is why so many farmers have crippling debt, and why they don’t go for biochar, as it slightly reduces yield in the first few years.” Even after explaining that yield would have to drop beyond 50% before a net loss would be made (as it removes some labour costs and the cost of fertiliser), it was still not welcomed.

Shafer needed something that both farmers and governments could benefit from, that would create a tradeable market, and offer a whole new income to those who create biochar. With other countries far more advanced in their uses of biochar, it was not long before Shafer came up with an idea that has the potential to make a whole new market for people to trade in – while cleaning the air at the same time.

Creating Demand

15 years ago, the government pledged to give every Thai citizen access to clean drinking water, something that is still yet to be a reality. The water in our taps is filtered for chemicals, chlorine and all kinds of microbes, but with most of the province’s water collected from surface runoff, pesticides remain in our tap water. “The pesticide levels are not even recorded by the authorities,” Shafer exclaims. “We are all washing in pesticide water!”

However, for Shafer, it was this disappointing fact that gave him a way to create a demand. A way for farmers to make money from biochar.Biochar is often used in water filtration across the world, with the ability to absorb forms of chemicals (such as pesticides) where conventional filtration techniques fall short. According to Shafer, if Thailand began to use biochar in water filtration plants, we would see biochar quickly turn into a locally made, high-demand product, creating monetary incentives for farmers and in turn, will fix the smoke problems, clean our water and h elp prevent the impending soil fertility crisis.

It’s a win win situation, but Warm Heart’s big plan is still in its infancy.

“If I could convince the government to make a rule that for every community over 250,000 people, pesticides must also be filtered out of the water, like in Europe, then that can create the demand,” explains Shafer. This could create a snowball of positive effects for the entire country: famers could begin to make money from their waste, save money on fertilising their soils and choose from more crops to grow. The local population will know that their water is cleaner and safer, increasing support for the local governments who implement the law changes…and the almost-forgotten by-product is that the air will be smoke free too.

Burning Interest

In January 2016 Shafer held a meeting with the deputy governor who then followed up with a visit to Phrao. “At the end of the presentation, he told all of the officials who attended (Chiang Dao, Mae Chaem, Phrao and Samoeng) that they were to adopt our technology,” Shafer said happily. This was swiftly followed by 80 local government officials joining a one-day training programme followed by another programme with 40 farmers from Phrao the next day, who in turn have organised their own training days to spread the word to the local farmers in their area.

While standing over a demonstration burn in one of their more basic biochar ovens, Shafer said that all he wanted to do was to “save the world.” A tall order. But some of the most marginalised people ofThailand’s society could soon become empowered, earn more money than they ever did before, and be hailed as heroes when all the smoke disappears.

What clearly needs to happen is for progressive politicians to see the vast number of positive outcomes of creating a serious demand for biochar, and make that demand a reality. “Ifwe lived in a perfect world, farmers would all just switch to biochar to save the air, but with no immediate profit very few are interested,” said Shafer slightly deflated. But with support from governments, organisations, and freelance campaigners such as Marisa Marchitelli [Citylife February 2016 cover story] there is no doubt that given the right circumstances and support, Warm Heart’s biochar ovens could really change Northern Thailand; empowering farmers, cleaning our water and giving us back our sorely missed smoke-free Chiang Mai.

New Ecology Research Study Results from University of Helsinki Described (Biochar amendment in the green roof substrate affects runoff quality and quantity)

By a News Reporter-Staff News Editor at Ecology, Environment & Conservation — Current study results on Ecology Research have been published. According to news reporting originating in Lahti, Finland, by VerticalNews journalists, research stated, “The utilisation of ecosystem services has been suggested as one solution to manage urban environmental problems, one of which is the excessive quantity or poor quality stormwater. As roofs contribute significantly to the amount of runoff, vegetated, i.e. green roofs have become an increasingly popular way to manage urban water in densely built areas.”

The news reporters obtained a quote from the research from the University of Helsinki, “However, green roofs may introduce a new source of water pollution evidenced as higher concentrations of nutrients, especially phosphorus, in runoff compared to that in precipitation inputs. In two controlled, replicated experiments, one in the field for 7 months and another in the laboratory for 6 weeks, the amendment of biochar to green roof substrates was studied for its potential to mitigate the leaching of nutrients from newly installed pre-grown green roof Sedum and meadow mats. Nutrient concentrations were an order of magnitude higher in runoff from green roofs than in rain water. In the field experiment, biochar reduced the cumulative leaching of nutrients, even though biochar did not significantly reduce nutrient concentrations. These results can be interpreted as a combined impact of biochar on both the quantity and quality of runoff over time, the quantitative effect being apparently stronger than the qualitative. In the laboratory experiment, one type of biochar reduced nutrient concentrations and load in runoff while another type had an opposite effect.”

According to the news reporters, the research concluded: “As the properties of biochar can vary considerably, careful studies are necessary before large-scale implementation of biochar amendment in green roofs are considered, to avoid unintended consequences.”

Helping the soil

HADLEY — Inside a greenhouse at Astarte Farm, garlic seedlings grow in small containers. Each are filled with compost supplemented with biochar, a material designed to maintain the moisture and nutrients of the soil. This improves the quality of the plants that will eventually be sold at the River Valley Co-op in Northampton.

“We’re pretty excited by the results we’ve seen from this,” said Dan Pratt, the Astarte farm manager at 123 West St., pointing to a five-gallon bucket filled with the deep brown, finely ground biochar.

“In a six-week period last year with no rain, two inches down (in the soil) we would see moisture. In untreated soil, we would have to go six to eight inches down” for moisture.

At the same time that other area farms were scrambling to find water, Astarte did not irrigate, said Annalise Clausen, the farm’s production manager. “Other farms were running out of water,” Clausen said.

The biochar used at Astarte comes from NextChar, an Amherst-based biotech startup, established in 2015. Its founders envision creating a high-end product, using patent-pending technology that will improve crops, while providing renewable heat energy and reducing carbon dioxide emissions associated with wood debris.

NextChar is an outgrowth of AC FOX, a Harvard-based company where a pilot processor, using pyrolysis, converts biomass directly into biochar, said chief technology officer Hugh McLaughlin, of Groton.

“The (pyrolysis) process is heating biomass, but heating it in such a manner that it turns into biochar, but not with enough oxygen so that it turns into ash,” McLaughlin said.

The biochar is now used primarily to supplement compost, helping to keep the moisture in soil and its nutrients from escaping.

McLaughlin said NextChar purchased all rights to AC FOX’s equipment and 14 years of development efforts, including the 2013 recipe used to make its biochar from biomass. The new company is focused on creating biochar in small batches and repeatedly testing the material to get the right consistency and absorbency.

NextChar is already moving forward with a processor five times the size, called the 5X processor, that will need 2,000 tons of dry biomass a year to make 500 tons of biochar. Now being built in central Massachusetts, NextChar hopes to locate this at the Five College Farm in North Hadley, the former Montgomery Rose on Route 47, later this year.

McLaughlin said the company has a $1 million budget to build and site both the 5X and a planned 6X processor, and anticipates needing to raise an additional $2.5 million from investors to become a self-sustaining operation.

Unlike a biomass plant, such as the one that helps to heat Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton that burns the material and leaves ash at the end, the NextChar processor roasts the woodsy material with little oxygen. That provides significant heat, while at the same time trapping the greenhouse gases as part of the biochar.

Keegan Pyle, vice president of communications and project development for NextChar, said the goal is significant reductions in the greenhouse gases that are released by biomass plants, the natural decay of wood or wood being mulched and chipped.

“When put through this process, it traps about 50 percent of the carbon dioxide,” Pyle said, adding that the biochar creates what she calls “a condominium of plant life.”

“We’re working with agriculture right now because that’s the environment most people are comfortable with,” Pyle said. “The idea is you spend less on compost and fertilizer over the years because the biochar holds nutrients in there.”

“What it does is creates all these layers, thousand of layers, by pyrolysis,” Pyle said. “That makes it super absorbent so when you put it in the soil it acts like a sponge.”

At Astarte Farm, owned by Jim Mead, Pratt said he previously has used other forms of biochar, ordering from three outlets and noticing a variation in the material. This varying quality may cause resistance from some farmers who have seen biochar retard the growth of plants.

From his view, the biochar produced by NextChar has a nice granular composition, slightly moist and is non-dusty. “It’s something comfortable to handle,” Pratt said.

Inside an unheated high-hoop greenhouse, rows of plants are growing that have not been irrigated since November, which Pratt attributes, in part, to the use of biochar.

The various plants are growing in soil that is a mix of 10 percent biochar and 90 percent compost, improving the yields of lettuce and garlic, Pratt said.

The farm also has applied about 3 cubic yards of biochar to asparagus, seeing how it migrates into the soil and increases the amount of earthworms and ground beetles. “It will absolutely load up the soil with microscopic, beneficial activity,” Pratt said.

Biochar may also mean reducing the tilling of soils, which releases carbon dioxide when soil is exposed.

“We’re experimenting with this as a no-till amendment,” Pratt said, adding he sees biochar as a “miracle ingredient.” He said, “I’m jacked about the product.”

Pyle said she is talking to local dairy farms about odor controls using biochar in “manure lagoon” treatments, and this month expects to meet with the Northampton Energy and Sustainability Commission showing members how the process can cut carbon dioxide emissions from biomass waste in half, while also providing heat to a city building.

Because it absorbs toxins and heavy metals, biochar is also ideal for preventing phosphorus and nitrogen runoff, such as in Vermont for farms near Lake Champlain. “We’re very confident it can keep nitrogen and phosphorus in the soil,” Pyle said.

In Europe and Japan, some farms have mixed a portion of biochar into feed for cattle, reducing the methane gas they produce which escapes into the atmosphere.

Biochar can also be used in making plastic to help it break down more easily.

“We can imagine all these different applications for biochar,” Pyle said.

Pyle said there is no danger that NextChar will run out of wood waste.

”What we use is mostly woody biomass,” Pyle said, adding that the company can also accept waste from farms. “It’s suitable so long as there is waste, and I don’t think there’s a shortage of woodsy biomass waste in New England.”

UDRF Strategic Initiative grants support studies in health, environment, energy and cybersecurity

11:29 a.m., March 9, 2016–Four early-career researchers have won University of Delaware Research Foundation Strategic Initiative (UDRF-SI) grants to pursue studies in eye health, alternative energy, environmental health and cybersecurity.

The competitive grants, awarded annually by UDRF, are provided as seed money for projects that support the goals of the University’s strategic initiative – “Delaware Will Shine” – and show potential for success and the ability to draw additional grant support.

Each researcher receives $45,000 in support.

The 2015-16 UDRF-SI awards went to:

Salil L. Lachke, assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, for his study of cataracts and genetic associations.

Kalehiwot Nega Manahiloh, assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, for a microscopic study on the saturated hydraulic conductivity of soil and biochar mixtures.

• John Newberg, assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, for his study of how catalytic surfaces change under operating conditions.

Chengmo Yang, assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, for her work on securing cyber platforms against hardware trojans.

Salil Lachke

Lachke’s research focuses on eye disorders, including cataracts, which are a leading cause of blindness around the world and are at the center of this study.

Specifically, he is looking at the genes associated with maintaining transparency in the eye’s lens.

He developed an online gene discovery tool called iSyTE (integrated systems tool for eye gene discovery), which is hosted at UD’s Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology.

He and his lab already have identified several genes that, when defective, appear to contribute to the formation of cataracts and this study will test that hypothesis and further define the role of two specific genes – Mafg and Mafk – while also mapping out a gene regulatory network for future analysis of the massive quantity of data collected.

The work is expected to further expand what is known about lens-related genetics and shed light on other genetic links to cataracts, in turn contributing to defining a genetic circuit for lens development and maintenance.

Lachke earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Pune, India, and his doctorate at the University of Iowa. He did postdoctoral work at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital before joining the UD faculty in 2011.

In 2012, he was named a Pew Scholar in Biomedical Sciences, a prestigious award by the Philadelphia-based Pew Charitable Trusts in recognition of his innovative work, and in 2013 was selected as a Kavli Frontiers of Science Fellow by a committee of U.S. National Academy of Sciences members.

His research also has drawn support from the Fight for Sight Foundation, the Alcon Research Institute, the Knights Templar Eye Foundation, INBRE Delaware, and the National Eye Institute and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research of the National Institutes of Health.

Kalehiwot Manahiloh

Manahiloh’s research focuses on unsaturated soil mechanics, nondestructive investigation of geomaterials, and micromechanics.

Specifically, this study focuses on investigating the microscopic features found in mixtures of soil and biochar, a type of charcoal used as a soil amendment. Biochar may be a promising piece of strategic response to climate change because of its ability to store carbon dioxide. Estimates suggest that converting agricultural waste into biochar could remove 4 of the 43 gigatons of carbon dioxide produced by humans each year.

Biochar also enhances moisture- and nutrient-retention properties of some soils. But it cannot be applied broadly yet, because it is not clear how to predict its influence on soil hydrology. It has produced good results in some soils, but has been detrimental in others.

Manahiloh’s study would look at how soil-biochar mixtures respond under saturated flow conditions, using X-ray CT scans and digital imagery to test two hypotheses about how biochar affects the soil’s water conductivity.

The research could have important implications for work on alternative energy and environmental solutions, and could have a significant economic impact for the U.S. poultry industry.

Manahiloh earned bachelor’s and master’s degress at Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) University and his doctorate at Washington State University in 2013. He joined the UD faculty in 2013.

John Newberg

The Newberg research group focuses on energy and environmental sciences at the molecular level. A major part of that work is studying the effect water has on surfaces and whether it enhances or inhibits chemical changes.

In this study, Newberg and his lab are exploring ways to convert carbon dioxide into liquid fuel, specifically exploring the surface chemistry of silver particles on titanium dioxide while it is performing as a photocatalyst (a catalyst triggered by light) in a carbon-dioxide reduction process.

The work is done at nanoscale, using an ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy system that he says provides a “unique set of eyes.” The uncommon technology enables researchers to see what is happening on surfaces during catalytic processes.

The work will advance UD’s catalysis research and its significance for alternative energy and environmental solutions.

Newberg earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees at the University of California (Berkeley, Davis and Irvine, respectively), worked as a senior engineer for Intel Corp. where he was part of the team that developed flash memory, and was a postdoctoral fellow at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab before joining the UD faculty in 2012.

Chengmo Yang

Yang’s research has focused on computer architecture and embedded systems, with emphasis on reliability and efficiency.

In this study, she and her lab will continue to work on ways to defend against “hardware trojans,” malicious circuits that attack embedded devices in the Internet of Things and render them untrustworthy.

Because computer hardware is designed, fabricated and tested by many different companies around the world, with various functions outsourced to business partners, hardware platforms are vulnerable to attack through rogues that infiltrate third-party design teams. Their work can cause catastrophic, cascading failure of smart grids, health data, manufacturing, “smart cities” and just about anything else connected to the Internet.

It is important to check if someone along the line has inserted something that could leak confidential information or disrupt other functions, Yang says.

Specifically, the study will focus on developing a vendor-diverse monitoring process that allows individual nodes to keep an eye on neighboring nodes to ensure those neighbors are not colluding against them and also to contribute to a comprehensive detection system that covers the entire connected framework.

Yang completed her undergraduate work at the Peking University in Beijing, China, and master’s and doctorate work at the University of California, San Diego. She joined the UD faculty in 2010 and received the prestigious National Science Foundation Early Career Award in 2013.

I would agree. I don’t know, though I imagine most plants aren’t going to take up too much salt, at least not enough to make any kind of problem. And there will indeed be important trace minerals that are useful.

Rinse. My rinse area drains into a barrel. The ash and bits of biochar are valuable, but remember that ash water can substantially change pH where applied. Innoculate the rinsed biochar with beneficial microbes via compost, alfalfa meal slurry, comfrey tea (whatever). biochar headlines 03 2016

Dig a trench deep enough to contain your brush pile. Start small — a small fire is easier to manage than a large one. Dig your trench in your garden’s location to save labor and make it easier to incorporate the biochar into the soil later.

Loosen the soil at the bottom of the trench with a pitchfork or shovel. This technique, called “double digging,” encourages plant roots to grow deeper and results in a healthier, more productive garden.

Dump your brush into the trench and arrange the materials so that there’s some airflow between them.

Light your brush with matches or a lighter. You may need to use smaller twigs as kindling to get the fire going.

Watch the fire closely. The key to producing the best biochar is in the color of the smoke. Initially, the fire will produce white smoke, which is mostly water vapor. The white smoke transitions to a yellowish color as the resins and sugars in the wood burn. Finally, the smoke will grow thinner and more of a grayish blue.

Cover the fire with about 1 inch of soil after the smoke changes to grayish blue. This restricts the oxygen supply and puts a damper on the fire.

Put out the fire with water once the wood has smoldered into charcoal chunks.

Dig the biochar into your soil. Add compost and fertilizer if desired. Dig and turn the soil thoroughly to make sure everything is well-incorporated.

New partnership for Biochar in Africa

The African Biochar Partnership was launched during an international workshop at the World Agroforestry Centre, Nairobi in early March 2016.

The partnership is aimed at improving coordination and communication among biochar initiatives as well as building capacity on biochar system approaches to help achieve optimal use of biomass and bio-waste.

Biochar can be defined simply as charcoal that is used for agricultural purposes. It is created using a pyrolysis process, heating biomass in a low oxygen environment. Biochar can be used in agriculture improve and maintain soil fertility and to increase soil carbon sequestration.

Two initiatives which were the focus of the Biochar Systems for Africa workshop and which will benefit from the partnership are the Biochar Plus project and the Biochar for Sustainable Soils (B4SS) initiative.

The Biochar Plus project is co-funded by the EU and the African Caribbean and Pacific States Cooperation Programme in Science and Technology, involving partners from Cape Verde, Ethiopia, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Togo, Zimbabwe and Italy.

B4SS is funded by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF), and involves partners in China, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Kenya, Peru, Vietnam and Australia. The World Agroforestry Centre leads activities in Kenya for the B4SS project, which builds on a long-term collaboration in Western Kenya with Cornell University and University of Nairobi.

The new African Biochar Partnership will facilitate knowledge sharing and agreement of standard methodologies for the thorough evaluation of biochar technologies from a systems perspective across the agricultural, energy, waste management and health sectors. It will comprise all relevant partners and stakeholders already working on biochar systems in Africa, including regional and international institutions inside and outside the continent.

The partnership will also facilitate the production and dissemination of improved cook stoves to help ameliorate the continuing problem of overreliance on woody biomass to meet domestic energy demand in sub-Saharan Africa.

Daisy Hill Farm owner Meadow Martell was happy that we made a big dent in a multi-year accumulation of old grape vines, blackberries and other woody waste. Meadow covered the piles back in the fall with used truck tarps from Sharp’s Tarps in Grants Pass (a great resource, people!). As a result, the wood was stayed dry – mostly between 15% and 25% moisture and was suitable for biochar production. A small crew of neighbors showed up to help and share in the biochar bounty. Meadow will use the biochar in compost and in the chicken yard.

We load the two kilns full with loose packed grapevines and light the top

Once the initial charge burns down to glowing coals, we add more, in layers

We lit these at 9:30 in the morning. by 1:00 pm we have added the last layer

At 2 pm the last layer has burned down and we are ready to quench

Agromin Gardening Tips: Plant smart in April for maximum results in your garden

With rainfall totals below average in southern California, April is the time to plant smart while saving water in spring and summer, says Agromin, an Oxnard and Huntington Beach-based manufacturer of earth-friendly compost products made from organic material collected from more than 50 California cities. Residents can obtain Agromin soil products in bulk or in bags at Rainbow Environmental Services (gate seven) in Huntington Beach and in bulk at South Coast Supply in Huntington Beach and Los Alamitos.

Add Mulch To Reduce Water Usage: The cost of water is on the rise and watering restrictions are still in place. Adding mulch to your yard can mean significant water savings. Depending on weather conditions, mulch can extend the period between watering by one to two days. Mulch holds in moisture, prevents erosion and keeps the soil cool. Till older mulch into the soil and add another two to three inches of new mulch around plants, shrubs and trees.

Plant Drought Tolerant Herbs: Some types of herbs do very well with little water. Herbs that thrive in dry conditions include sage, rosemary, lavender, oregano and thyme. All these herbs come from the Mediterranean region. Once their roots are established during the first growing season, they require minimal watering and love full sun.

Add Water-Saving Compost to Lawns: New lawn-related products on the market contain biochar, which enable more time between lawn waterings. Biochar is a naturally-produced soil amendment. Its tiny pores retain water, much like a sponge. Biochar also contains nutrients to help the soil and plants to remain healthy. As another advantage, biochar captures carbon emissions, which reduces greenhouse gasses.

Cover Bare Spots With Bark: Spruce up bare spots around lawns and gardens with bark. Chopped bark, usually 1/4” to 3” in size, can be placed in large open areas to give a yard a finished look – and requires no water.

Upgrade Your Garden Soil: Garden soil should be replenished with nutrients before new planting. First, break up hard soil and add organic soil amendments. Next, consider rotating your garden—for example, plant tomato where corn was grown last year. By rotating vegetables of the same plant family to a new location, you can better prevent crop-specific pests and diseases from reappearing.

Plant Heat-Loving Vegetables: Now is the time to plant most all vegetables, especially warm-season vegetables such as Armenian cucumber, artichoke, corn, cucumber, eggplant, melon, peppers, potatoes, squash, sunflowers, sweet potatoes, tomatoes and zucchini.

Use a Drip Irrigation System: Avoid using sprinklers or other overhead watering because when doing so, much of the water evaporates. Install a drip irrigation system so water goes directly to the plant’s roots.
Water the garden in the early morning before 7:00 a.m., giving water time to soak deep into the soil before the heat of the day.
