We have a small farm in North Florida that's planted mostly in pines. We also have a relationship with a local school that uses the farm as part of its sustainability curriculum. We'd like to build a retort like yours to recycle our waste pine and to improve our fields (and the school's gardens). Please send plans for the retort.
Thanks,

Read the article in the Dec or Jan. 'Nimbin Good Times' about you - what an amazing success story you are and I hope you have a wonderful 2012. I met you once at Uki Primary school Enviro day I think, also saw you at Blue Knob Farmers Mkt. Its so inspiring to read of such wonderful proponents of sustainable living. If only I was younger and didnt have a large garden to look after, I'd do some helping. Best wishes. Fantastic post!
I'm just getting into Bio char and its wondrous potential here in the South West of England. Most of my connections and friends doing agriculture and small holdings around are very committed to BD which is great to see, but I think sometimes they get to stuck...treat it like a bible and don't dare sway, so I to am very interested in where the two can meet and correspond. I'm making my own bio-char at home currently and will then run a few tests on various plants to see how they perform.
e.g. Bed of crop A in Organic compost/permaculture conditions
Bed of crop A in in BD conditions
Bed of crop A in Bio Char conditions with organic compost/soils
Bed of crop A in BD conditions with bio char.
Let me know if you have had any more luck.

I myself treat biomass waste in a higher category than crops grown for biochar. Sustainable is the key. If you have tons of waste then use it all up before you even consider growing crops to make biochar. If your growing crops to make biochar then consider not makeing a monoculture try experimenting with many different plants all planted in the same area. Greed and Monoculture go hand in hand to kill our planet if your going to think Biochar think Diversity and you will help nature a lot. Good to hear from you

MEanwhile there's ton's of junk biomass on island and we hope to find the way to use it to create biochar. Is any one plant, say bamboo, more carbon retensive than another into the char state?

WE re interested in doing workshops in Maui to get bio-char production underway with the eye to when our just being installed bamboo crops mature. I am currently researching and about to fabricate two TLUDs for a project in downtown Phoenix, Arizona, USA., where a community has been planting open lots with sunflowers, which when harvested will be used to create both biochar with the stalks and oil with the seeds (and a local high school will make that into biodiesel). I'm really excited to learn about biochar, especially after contributing towards a biodiesel project down in Peru. Also eager to keep traveling and keep experiencing sustainable living, so if there's anything I can do to help, let me know!

Hi!
