I have been researching re the Adam retort and found this biochar site and your interesting experience building the retort.Would you have plans available on how to build this retort. We would wish to replicate it here in Negros the Philippines to addres the need for sustainably and carbon neutral production of charcoal which as a popular fuel for domestic use, moreso that liquified petroleum gas has become prohibitively expensive and households are resorting to the use of wood and charcoal. There is a local community fabricating bricks wher we could source these from.
Anticipating your kind reply.

I accidentally came across your facebook page which then I googled you retort which I find very interesting. for your information, I am located at West Borneo in Indonesia, and currently all of us (industries and farmers) are using traditional method to produce charcoal which we all understand that it is very environmentally hazardous and not efficient. It would be really helpful if you can share to us your Adam Retort design technique to also improve the life quality of the people in this part of the world. many thanks and sorry for the bad english.

Greetings from Indonesia!! I am very impressed with the adam-retort design and have many old kiln bricks laying around our biodynamic farm. Are the plans available somewhere for the Adam Retort and could you send them if you have them or send a link?
Many Thanks,

A pit , besser block kiln , steel box with a gass outlet underneath . now i just light a fire in a 4 cubic meter steel box and keep adding wood pretty much as fast as i can throw it in until i have gone through about 6-8-10 cubic meters of split wood and the box is 1/2-3/4 full of charcoal and then put it out with water , tip it out and rake it out with heaps of water . all over in 4 or 5 or 6 hours and one and a half - 2 cubic meters of char including about 10% half burned wood .
raised beds --25%char ,25%cow dung , 50% alluvial to soil some lime and softrock and things grow like in the dinosaur age

I live in Mozambique and I ama jack of trades for poverty alleviation and one of my interests is biochar for conserving soil and improve the in come for poor farmers. Chemical fertilisers has the benefits on short term to increase harvest and biochar has the long term benefits that may make fertilisers obsolete. Our question is how do we make a stove which can be made locally (like a brick kiln) and how would we know when it is ready for not burning everything down to ashes?

Hi<br
